Bishop by Candace Nola is a supernatural horror thriller. It was published on April 1, 2022 by Uncomfortably Dark Horror and weighs in at 158 pages.
This story takes you on a chilling journey through Alaska. Troy Spencer will stop at nothing to locate his thrill-seeking sister and niece who’ve gone missing in the Alaskan wilderness for five days. A winter storm complicates things. Troy is determined to help find them himself and is willing to pay anything to get the best guide in the area, a loner named Bishop. It’s a race against time, and Troy isn’t the only one hunting his family.
The frigid setting is depicted so well. I felt like I was experiencing the snowstorm and the unforgiving Alaskan cold. This book is a real page-turner. Nola does a wonderful job pacing the story out, giving just enough hints and suspenseful moments to keep readers on the edges of their seats.
Having lived in Colorado for a handful of years, and gone on numerous hikes in the mountains, I found the descriptions believable and easy to imagine. The missing characters, Erin and her daughter Casey, had realistic challenges and fears aside from the supernatural dangers. I enjoyed following their POV as well as that of Troy and Bishop. I was able to get a full experience through each of the characters and thoroughly enjoyed this exciting story.
Each of the main characters have deep emotions that Nola brings to life on the page. I could feel the despair, fear, panic, sorrow, and longing as they felt it. Troy, Bishop, Erin, and Casey presented like real people on a wild Alaska documentary. I felt emotional a handful of times while reading the book, and I believe it’s because of their depth. It’s easy to get attached to these characters. I especially loved Bishop! There’s a lot of introspection for each of them as the story is told which helped propel the story forward with ease.

I love books that have a backbone of rich lore. Bishop’s tales of his past drew me in. His indigenous background was a fantastic layer Nola used as a foundation to introduce the danger Troy’s sister and niece were facing.
Another thing I loved about Bishop was the underlying action and adventure feel it gave me. There’s a man versus nature theme throughout the book to keep readers on their toes. This story also has a supernatural element, complete with a monster, which I definitely enjoy. There’s a smattering of good old-fashioned gore here and there, too, which always gets a thumbs up from me.
One of my favorite things about a book like this is the overarching theme that no matter how prepared you are, nature has a way of dominating you and showing who’s really in control. Throw in supernatural elements, and it’s a game changer. This was a very enjoyable read!
