Man, Fuck This House by Brian Asman

Man, Fuck This House is a ghost fiction novella by Brian Asman. It was published on October 19, 2021 by Mutated Media and weighs in at 158 pages of pure psychological horror.

I can’t lie, the title of this book caught my attention right away. I wasn’t sure what I was getting into, but I just plain had fun reading this! It had spooky moments, humor, and great characters - even if I wanted to body slam a few of them.

I enjoyed the layout of this book. It kept me enthralled, knowing time was ticking away as strange and horrific things unfolded. Each section is broken down by the day, and the entire story is told over a time span of six days. It flowed and kept me invested the whole time I was reading. I love weird horror, and this book definitely fit that description. I enjoyed being able to set aside reality and just sink into this enjoyable and thrilling tale.

Some of the most interesting aspects of this book are the relationships between the characters. Sure this book is about a haunted house, and even it is a character of sorts, but it’s definitely more than that. Asman did a great job fleshing out each of the family members that move into the house and the situations that create the tension between them that propel the story forward. He even throws in a neighbor with a dubious background for good measure.

We mainly stay with Sabrina, a wife and mother who feels hopeful to start over with her new life across the country in the Craftsman home they purchased sight unseen. Bored of the daily routine of her marriage with Hal, a reverse mortgage salesman, she’s anticipating a little bit of adventure.

Unfortunately, she can’t escape the horrors that moved with her - especially her son Damien. Aptly named, he and his sister Michaela fill the roles of aloof kids and even take us on side tangents of their own to keep the story flowing. Just when Sabrina starts to think things might be getting easier, she discovers she couldn’t be more wrong. As her imperfect life begins to change in ways that frighten her more than she could have imagined, she finds the strength to gain back her control.
